Citizen, an indie, punk-rock band hailing from the Southern Michigan and Northwest Ohio area is currently on tour across the U.S. and leaving their mark along the way. The band, which features Mat Kerekes (Vocals), Nick Hamm (Guitar), Ryland Oehlers (Guitar), Eric Hamm (Bass), now joined by Jake Duhaime (Drums) of the band Freedom, are a promising dynamic as they’ve begun to establish their sound.
Their passion, both as performers and artists, is visible through the continued growth being portrayed in their music. Their previous release, Young States, sported some more upbeat, faster paced songs such as “Right Through,” which gradually carries the listener from each verse to chorus, building up until it reaches it’s climax with emotion-filled repetitive chanting.
In contrast, Citizen’s latest LP Youth, released last summer, is a darker take on their previous works. One of the featured songs, “How Does It Feel?” gives off a haunting vibe, with guitar rifts that echo themselves relentlessly throughout the song, paired with lyrics like “And how does it feel to be what you’ve become? What you said you would never be?” leave you with goosebumps in the best way possible.
The band’s ability to vary their music so seamlessly, both musically and emotionally is promising as they continue to release more music. To learn more about the band, and check out new music like their single “Cicuta,” which dropped last month, check out their website http://citizentheband.net/.
